Khwaja Ahmad Abbas Memorial Trust
Khwaja Ahmad Abbas Memorial Trust is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in 2013 under the Chairpersonship of Dr. Syeda Saiyidain Hameed.
In 2013, few friends and admirers of late Khwaja Ahmad Abbas (1914-1987) formed Khwaja Ahmad Abbas Centenary Celebrations Committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Aziz Qureshi (the Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand) to commemorate his 100th birth anniversary: 1914-2014.
The Committee focused the celebrations on Abbas’s life and works by holding several international seminars on a subject and theme close to his ideals; the Committee screened films produced, directed and scripted by him, held exhibitions of his selected writings and film posters of his movies in different venues such as Delhi, Aligarh, Panipat, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Dehradun. The official website dedicated to K. A. Abbas and his works was also launched. A special centenary compendium of his works and major achievements titled, ‘Khwaja Ahmad Abbas: Bread Beauty Revolution’ edited by Syeda Saiyidain Hameed and Iffat Fatima was published in 2015.
Subsequently, the Committee formed the Khwaja Ahmed Abbas Memorial Trust in 2013 under the chairpersonship of Dr. Syeda Hameed to continue the celebration of the life and legacy of Abbas. This was done to acquaint the new generation with Abbas’s work and to reiterate its contemporary relevance.
In the 73 years that Abbas lived, he wrote more than 74 books; as a journalist he produced the longest running column in the history of Indian journalism. Besides screenplays and dialogues for popular films, he also wrote plays and numerous short stories. However, there is no available record or documentation of all his writings since his entire library, housing thousands of books and precious documents and mementos, was mysteriously destroyed soon after his death. The Trust, therefore, took up the task of putting together a complete list of Abbas’s works as well as creating a space for K. A. Abbas archives by reprinting some of his memorable books, conducting research on the writings and films of K. A. Abbas hoping that their efforts at documentation will lead to the preservation and propagation of his legacy.
