    Neecha Nagar was a pioneering efforts in the field of expressionist social realism in Indian cinema. It became the first Indian film to gain international recognition after it shared the Grand Prix du Festival at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946

    Neecha Nagar was written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, the film is inspired from Maxim Gorky’s Lower Depths. It took an expressionist look at the gulf between the rich and poor in society.

    Neecha Nagar is the debut film of actress Kamini Kaushal and for Pandit Ravi Shankar as a music director.
